Joseph Arpaia

Joseph Arpaia, MD,  (or Dr. Joe) loves helping people learn to use their mind and body to heal from illness and grow as a person. He completed his undergraduate education in chemistry at the California Institute of Technology in 1982. He then did research in molecular genetics for several years before graduating from UC Irvine medical school in 1990. He completed specialty training in psychiatry at UC Irvine in 1994. During his psychiatric training ,in addition to learning about psychotropic medications, he also learned cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, and mind-body methods such as biofeedback and guided imagery. He also participated in research on brain physiology and mathematical theories of perception and consciousness. In 1997 he opened a private practice in psychiatry and behavioral medicine in Eugene. 

In his medical work Joe combined medical treatments with therapy and mind-body skills. Joe has also been consulting, teaching and leading workshops for almost 30 years. He coached executives on reducing stress and increasing resilience. He worked with an international team to develop a training program teaching law enforcement officers how to reduce errors in high pressure situations. He has also applied these methods to help health-care workers and first responders.  He has published several scientific papers as well as for general publications such as Yoga Journal and Psychology Today.
